Running with Dog?

Running is a great way to lose weight, and that applies to your dog as well as you. It increases his heart rate, and burns more calories than just taking him for a walk. There are things you need to do before you start a running with dog program.
Firstly, visit your vet for a checkup. If your dog is particularly heavy, they may recommend that he lose some weight before he starts running. This will prevent injury to his joints. Not only that, but some breeds are just not built for running!
If he gets a clean bill of health, follow a recommended program. The Pooch to 5k program has been designed by a veterinarian to help you train your dog to run 5km. It is a 12 week program which only takes half an hour or so, three times a week. Each week is a gentle increase in running time, that’s manageable by most dogs and their owners.
One thing that’s most important is to get support. It’s easy to skip a running with dog session if you aren’t accountable. Get together with a friend and their dog, and do the program together. It’s so much more fun.
