Morbidly Obese Dog Loses Weight

Jiffy is a Border Collie who lived in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA, and in December 2008, he weighed 120lbs. That, for those of us who are into metric, is 54.4kg. Because he found it so hard to move around, he froze to the footpath! A court ordered his owner to give him up, and he has now lost 40lbs and is finding it easier to get around.
54.4kg. That’s not a lot less than I weigh, and I’m an adult human. I’m pleased that a judge acknowledged that overfeeding a dog is cruel. Border Collies are working dogs, and are very intelligent. They enjoy mental stimulation and exercise. When they’re as fat as Jiffy, they can’t do much, and they’d have a pretty ordinary quality of life.
Kudos to Jiffy’s new owners for managing to get the weight off him. It’s not easy to help your dog lose weight, and it’s a long slow process. There’s still a way to go but it sounds like Jiffy is now in very good hands.
