A Pill For Dog Obesity?

There is now a pill you can give your dog to treat his obesity! In the United States, Pfizer has registered a drug called Slentrol and claims it will help your dog to lose weight. It works by suppressing your dog’s appetite, so he doesn’t want to eat as much. It has been tested for several years and has been shown to be safe for many breeds of dog. Is dog obesity going to be a thing of the past?
Hmm. I’m not sure what to think of this. There are very few cases where an obese dog has a medical reason for his condition. In most cases, it’s a lifestyle choice on his behalf, by his owner. He gets too much to eat, and doesn’t burn enough of it up by exercising. Simple.
Is it appropriate to give your dog a drug to save you the hard work and emotional stress of putting him on a diet? On the one hand, it’s catering to people who find it difficult to say no to those big brown eyes. On the other hand, it may make life better for the obese dog, and it may be much quicker than waiting for his owner to restrict his food.
Personally, I would vote for the dog, and give him the drug to make his life easier as quickly as possible. Perhaps when his owner sees that he really doesn’t need as much food he has been given in the past, they may follow through and cut back on his diet. Either way, he’s better off.
